Workshop “TERN and Conurbations”
Thursday, 4th November 2004
Cologne, Germany

It is generally accepted that the sections of the TERN present significant bottlenecks within conurbations. The bottleneck problem can only be solved or significantly reduced within a cooperative working environment among the participating institutions. Among the significant activity fields in this regard are: coordinated application of traffic management measures, data and information exchange, development and implementation of joint strategies, cooperative establishment of information platforms, etc. Furthermore, the task of establishing multi-modal services arises mainly in conurbations.
Compared to other European regions the CENTRICO area is characterised by numerous large cities and economic centres in close proximity to one another. In earlier stages CENTRICO already dealt in various projects with optimising the transport activities between TERN and the large conurbations in the CENTRICO area. First significant improvements regarding the handling of transport activity have already been successfully tested and implemented.
The workshop promoted the exchange of experiences on an international level, summarised the work to date and assisted towards developing the strategic direction for the upcoming years, particularly for the period after 2006.
The CENTRICO partners are aware that a key element towards improving the capacities and safety levels of Europe’s roads is to be found herein. Organisational, technical and planning tasks of considerable scale must be tackled.
