Evaluation guidance

The objective of the Evaluation activity is to enable the achievements of similar ITS initiatives to be presented on a consistent basis. This objective is being achieved primarily through the dissemination of best practice advice and guidance on issues such as evaluation methodology, common performance indicators and the appropriate reporting of results.

Ramp Metering Synthesis

The present synthesis document highlights goals and operational issues concerning ramp-metering installations in different Member States and explains differences in national approaches. This synthesis is a good working base for a future 'common understanding' of ramp metering within CENTRICO. The partners agreed on some guidelines for future implementation.

Re-Routeing sign report

Considering the very nature of the CENTRICO area (density of the motorway network, multiplicity of border crossings on a same itinerary), the question of a common rerouting signalling was crucial. It is the reason why the CENTRICO consortium has installed at the end of 1998 a special working group aiming at consensus building in the domain of rerouting signalling. The common re-routeing sign is being implemented in Belgium, Germany and The Netherlands.

Decision Support Systems

Several CENTRICO partners are investigating and applying models for data completion and traffic forecasts in order to support traffic management decisions. Experts in CENTRICO have exchanged knowledge and experiences in 2001 and several steps have been taken until now. Hessen is applying the tool ASDA/FOTO on the complete Hessian motorway network. The simulation model developed for North Rhine-Westphalia reproduces the current traffic situation on the complete motorway network, which is disseminated to the road users on the internet since 2002. The same data-completion approach will be applied on the motorway network in Rhineland-Palatinate. More info : www.autobahn.nrw.de

Traffic Management Plan Brussels - Nancy

The objective of Nancy (Langres) / Brussels TMP is to facilitate cross-border road traffic management between these major population centres by providing information to drivers prior to and during their journeys. The major road traffic coordinating organisations involved in the TMP are the CRICR de l’Est (France), the CITA (Luxembourg) and the PEREX traffic centre (Belgium).
The TMP defines the actions that each respective authority will take in response to major events on the network, so that information can be rapidly communicated to drivers in a time effective and coordinated manner. Specifically, the TMP defines an accepted set of diversions that could be implemented in response to an incident, using VMS and radio as the primary information communication methods with drivers.

Cross border management experiences in The Netherlands

The current report is produced by the Department for Traffic Management and Information of the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management / Rijkswaterstaat (RWS). It intends to provide RWS and the partners in CENTRICO working or planning to work on cross border re-routing corridors with an overview of the experiences and lessons learned from the activities in The Netherlands. As such the report is of value both during the process of implementing such a corridor as well as during the operational phase. The four re-routing projects in which The Netherlands are currently involved are described.

Incident Management Handbook

Ministry of Transport / Directorate General of Public Works and Water Management Rijkswaterstaat (RWS)

Some 13% of the traffic jams on Dutch motorways are the result of incidents
like crashes and vehicles shedding their loads.
The highway authority aims to limit the length and the duration of these
type of traffic jams by applying Incident Management measures. The Incident
Management handbook has been drafted to support the implementation of
Incident Management on a regional level. It covers two regulations,
concerning the recovery of cars and trucks respectively and it facilitates
the coordination of activities of all parties involved.

The handbook has been translated to stimulate initiatives in Europe to
manage and to reduce the effects of traffic incidents.
